Jesse Maine Memorial Park

The Jesse Maine Memorial Park is a cute little neighborhood park that is located in Thurston. It tends to be a peaceful park that people walk their dogs through, or take their kids to to play on the jungle gym.

The park itself isn’t very large (2 acres), but it isn’t tiny either. It has a good mix of open field areas to play or train your dog in, as well as treed areas that can act as visual barriers and dynamic sniffing spaces for your dog to explore peacefully.

Jesse Maine Memorial Park is a free park with no fees or paid parking area. Simply park at the curb and walk in! The park is surrounded by sidewalk on 2 sides, and most traffic is foot traffic, meaning that their is generally parking readily available right at the park.

The ground itself is sloping and the park is situated going down a hill. This is great because it means that when standing at the top of the park you have a good vantage point of the rest of the park and can keep track of potential triggers or things that are difficult for your dog. This means that you can act accordingly and give your dog the support they need, rather than be caught off and surprised by a trigger.

The park patrons are pretty predictable here. They mostly stay on paths/sidewalks, or are utilizing the play structure or basketball court. This leaves you plenty of space for you to train your dog, and since there are great sightlines in the park, little way to be caught off guard by someone getting too close or cutting through the area that you’re using.

This is an on leash park, so obey leash laws while at the park. It is a dog friendly park and many of the people in the surrounding neighborhood walk their dogs around and through the park. The park is well maintained and gets regular maintenance, keeping it clean and stocked with bags. It is busiest in the afternoon which is when children tend to use the park, but this varies depending on the season.

Jesse Maine Memorial Park is sometimes used by larger groups to hold birthday parties or children’s events, but this is not that frequent, and the park is large enough that there is plenty of space away from these happenings. As far as the question of where to take your dog, this park is firmly situated on the visit, train, and play side of the list.

Overall this is a fantastic little gem of a park that I wholeheartedly endorse as a safe place to train your behaviorally challenged dog. Easy to move around in, easy to scout and scope out, respectful patrons, and plenty of emergency exits away from triggers if you need them!
